For most of the last decade the conversation was about megawatts. Who could finance them, who could build them, who could connect them to the cheapest land near the best resource. That conversation has quietly resolved. There is no shortage of solar, wind or battery proponents in Australia. There is a shortage of transmission, and a sharper shortage of the people who plan, design and energise it.
AEMO's Integrated System Plan made the scale plain. Thousands of kilometres of new high voltage backbone, dozens of Renewable Energy Zones, and a delivery window measured in years that the market does not have. Every developer we speak to has the same private worry. The generation will be ready before the grid is. When that happens the asset sits idle, marooned behind a connection queue.
So the real competition in 2026 is not for sites or for capital. It is for a small pool of senior engineers who understand how a 500kV line, a switching station and a connection agreement actually fit together.
Five projects, one talent pool.
Look at what is moving and the overlap becomes obvious. HumeLink across southern New South Wales. VNI West linking Victoria and New South Wales. Project EnergyConnect between South Australia and New South Wales. Marinus Link reaching across Bass Strait to Tasmania. And the transmission feeding the Central West Orana, New England and South West Renewable Energy Zones.
These are not staggered neatly across a calendar. They are running in parallel, and they draw on the same specialists.
- Grid connection engineers who can model and negotiate a generator performance standard with AEMO and the network service provider.
- High voltage primary and secondary design engineers for substations, switching stations and line works.
- Power systems and studies engineers fluent in PSCAD and PSS/E, the people who actually clear a connection.
- Easement, land access and approvals leads who can hold a corridor together through landholder negotiation.
From the LUVI desk, the candidates who hold all of this sit in the low hundreds nationally. Many already carry two or three approaches a month.
Everyone is hiring from the same room.
Here is the part hiring managers underestimate. AEMO, Transgrid, ElectraNet, AusNet, Powerlink and the major EPC contractors are not your only competition. The developers queued behind those connections are hiring the same profile, because a connection specialist inside a developer is what gets the asset built. Add the consultancies that staff the studies, and you have five or six categories of employer chasing one room of people.
That pressure shows up in three ways. Salaries for senior connection and HV roles have moved faster than almost any other discipline we track. Counteroffers have become routine, not exceptional. And lead times have stretched, because the strongest people are rarely on the open market. They are recruited out of delivery roles, quietly, often by a former colleague.
When a single project can lose months waiting on a connection sign off, the cost of an empty engineering seat is not a salary line. It is schedule risk on a multi billion dollar asset.
What it means for hiring rhythm.
The teams winning this race changed their cadence. They are not waiting for a vacancy to open before they engage the market. A few practical moves we are seeing work.
- Map the pool before you need it. Know the forty or fifty people in Australia who can do the senior connection work, and keep a relationship warm with all of them.
- Hire for the connection, not just the build. A brilliant project manager cannot rescue a stalled generator performance standard. Put a connection specialist in early.
- Move at the speed of the candidate, not the org chart. A two month interview loop loses you the person. Compress it.
- Be honest about location. Corridor work is regional. The package, the roster and the relocation support decide whether your offer is even considered.
Transmission is where the transition is won or lost over the next five years. The projects are funded. The corridors are being declared. The constraint that remains is human, and it is the one most plans still treat as an afterthought. We will keep tracking it here.
